My ZINNIAS! (Front Flower Bed - Part 3)

"My zinnias!" cried Spurgle.

If you've never read James Marshall's children's series
The Cut Ups you are really missing out. We love his books (he won the 2007 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for a 'substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children') and The Cut Ups are our all time favourite.

The Cut Ups and other James Marshall books

Because of James Marshall, we have zinnias...

...and use the line "Hello, boys"
(said Mary Frances Hooley) almost daily.

Where was I going with this? Oh yes, my front flower bed.  It is making progress!

My first season with a full sun flower bed has been a learning experience. I'll make some changes in the spring but we are really enjoying the flowers.

This is the first year we've planted orange cosmos and I'll plant them again next year. I love how bright they are and how they work with the hot pink zinnias and cosmos.

The first of the sunflowers is just starting to open up.
The bees aren't waiting any longer.

I planted pink, purple, and blue delphiniums;
I'm looking forward to them filling out next summer.

The black-eyed susans are just starting to bloom.
There should be oodles by late August.

I do enjoy the extra visitors we've been receiving lately.

  1. Your whole yard looks so lush and green! I, too, love zinnias and somehow for the first time ever, forgot to plant them. You must be a few weeks behind us, because my black-eyed susans have taken over! Don't you love the way sunflowers follow the sun?! Also on my list to plant next year.

The combination of your blue delphiniums and the bright oranges and pinks makes for a cheerful entrance to your yard. Well done!

  2. What an incredible flower bed! I love the lattice fencing idea. I may have to steal that. I need something for delphiniums and hollyhocks to lean on so they don't keep keeling over all the time.

  4. What a beautiful garden! You must have better weather there. It's been in the triple digits for nearly a month in Tulsa. Some days 115...

  8. Tracy I really enjoyed the three posts about your new flower bed. It is lovely, just truely beautiful. I have never heard of orange cosmos but I will be on the lookout now. My flower beds are taking a big hit this week, our high for today was 109 and many of my flowers are showing the strain so it was great to see you gorgeous flowers.

  10. Oh Tracy! The flowers you planted around your "new" fence have grown in beautifully. I was just in heaven looking at all your photos from the rain to the butterfly on the flower. Love it all! I bet you are just so happy you got that fence done when you did. The choices you made on the plantings were stellar. I have to go back now and look at everything again. I was just so excited to see how beautifully everything had grown in that I had to hurry and comment. Thanks for coming by and checking out my Longest Yard Sale post. I'm always glad when you stop by!

    1. The tree in the front is an amur cherry. We had two huge amur cherry trees at our first house, they are gorgeous and the bark is really pretty in the winter. Thanks much for your kind comments! :)
