I'm Dreaming of a White Kitchen...

Funky Junk Donna's theme tonight is 'white' and I've got it. In my kitchen now and outside. The white inside makes me happy. When we bought this house over a year ago the only thing I didn't care for was the kitchen. The BEFORE pics were taken before we moved in.

Happily this past May we started the makeover. Mr. Crow's Foot wanted to rip out the whole kitchen, but I stuck to my guns (and budget) and we painted.

The sanding begins. We use our potting bench as an outdoor work bench too.

A happy day for us; chipping off the drywall compound fake tiles and grapes. You couldn't even wash this thing. Eeeew.

We removed the old soffit and replaced it with beadboard. We Mr. CF built in a couple of display cubbies.

We did all of the work ourselves except for the stone backsplash behind the stove and the new countertops. Here Miss M helps our tiler. This part of the transformation took place in July.

A reminder of the BEFORE:

And the not quite finished AFTER: Pretend that crown moulding is on and the wood floors are in. Thanks.

Dang; I missed the shot of Mr. Crow Foot's handy dandy reworking of the cabinets. The new fridge is taller and wider and I didn't want to loose the storage above the fridge. We also added four hooks at the back door as there is no closet and you know where jackets end up if there isn't a place to hang them.

I missed my corner pantry when we moved here and there was this 'thing' stuck on the wall. We added the beadboard up top and the corner shelves to try to make it look like it fit in. The light is the next victim on my list.

Now THIS was interesting. The stove would have originally been on this wall in the 1965 house. There was a gas cook top on the island and it was another happy day for us when it disappeared and a new smooth cooktop went back on the outside wall.

Dark and reddish. Just not me. And those grapes.

I've got a valence to make (the fabric is waiting by the sewing machine) and I think I will paint the light hardware the ole oil rubbed bronze for some contrast. It was hard to make this room look warm in photos. It feels warm though. Honest.

One of my favourite details is this vintage towel bar that we found at one of my favourite antique shops. We loved that it still had it's original packaging!

I do like the over the range microwave; please squint so you don't see my junk in the old microwave home. I think I'd better fashion a curtain for there too. Remember you're ignoring the lack of crown moulding on that far wall too. That's the wall with the tricky angles.

My version of Jen at Tatertots and Jello's Thanksgiving printable... in turquoise of course! (Thanks Jen!)

I've got to paint that calendar frame white too. It's always a challenge to spray paint in the winter. Note the dog dish. Designed to slow him down at mealtime. I wonder if they make those for husbands?

Thanks for peeking!

  2. I love your kitchen redo. I still have white samples all over my kitchen. I just can't get myself to start! But your kitchen is a great motivator that's for sure. I love the addition of the bead board and the crown molding. Looks fantastic!

  3. Love your remodel! Looks fabulous!

But it was the vintage towel rack that sent me down memory lane. My grandmother had one of those in her kitchen. Oh how I'd love one of those!

  11. This is awesome gives me an idea of what to do with my soffits. I have started the painting, well priming the cabinets now. Question? Can you tell me more about your countertops? we will need to install our own on a budget. What are yours made of and how did you install?

    1. Hi Me! I really checked in to having the new laminate applied over the old. Apparently it can be done, but it is not the best way to do it. If you remove the old laminate, every spec of glue must be removed so that the surface is completely clean and flat. Not an easy task. I wanted to keep the old countertops to save the landfill and some $$$ but our guy did not recommend it. He built the new countertops on site. We ordered the laminate ourselves and the matching beveled edge that glues on. This saves time and labor as it is glued on in one piece. Hope that helps and good luck with yours! :)
